Changing the Future of Dining with a Good Balance between Taste and Health
Kirin, in collaboration with the Homei Miyashita Laboratory of Meiji University, has developed the Low-Salt Support Tableware that amplifies saltiness and umami taste* through the power of electricity. This device was created as a new tool to change the low-sodium lifestyle by focusing on the social issues that Japanese people have been facing in recent years, such as excessive salt intake and dissatisfaction with the taste of low-sodium foods.
By incorporating this product into everyday tableware and cutlery use, people can enjoy tasty meals with less salt. The Electric Salt Spoon has the potential to enrich the Food experience of people who are conscious of their health and beauty, as well as those who are trying to reduce salt as part of their diet.

A magic tableware that enhances the salty and umami flavors of a meal? How does it work?
 
Taste components in food, such as salt and umami, have electrical properties called ions. The Electric Salt Spoon, developed with this in mind, is equipped with technology that uses weak electricity to control the movement of taste components in food.
When the Electric Salt Spoon is used at mealtime, it controls the movement of ions by causing an electric current with a unique current waveform, which is drawn to the tongue where the taste is perceived. This mechanism allows for the enhancement of salty and umami tastes* of low-sodium foods.

To be used like regular tableware and to be easily integrated into everyday life.
 
The Electric Slat Spoon technology itself would work on devices that are worn in the mouth or on the teeth, because it uses the electric current that flows through the food to the tongue.
We intentionally chose the tableware/cutlery design so that the electric current can be generated naturally while eating.
In response to customers' requests saying, "This is a delicate issue for the body, and we don't want to be seen as 'someone who uses some special equipment,'" we have created a design that does not look like a "special machine" being used at an ordinary meal, and that can be easily blended into everyday life.
