Mercian Corporation (President: Michio Nagabayashi) announces a selection of wines made from grapes grown in their own vineyard in Shiojiri, Nagano Prefecture. As the Château Mercian Kataoka Vineyard series, Château Mercian Kataoka Vineyard Merlot & Cabernet Franc Selected Barrel Selection 2019, Château Merican Kataoka Vineyard Merlot Barrel Selection 2019 and Château Mercian Kataoka Vineyard 2019 will be available from late September at the Mariko Winery, Katsunuma Winery, Kikyogahara Winery and the Kirin online shop DRINX. Château Mercian Kataoka Vineyard Merlot & Cabernet Franc Barrel Selection 2019 will also be available through the Château Mercian Prestige Passport 2021-2022.
Based on their philosophy of growing the right variety in the right place, Château Mercian secure and develop areas suitable for cultivation before engaging in growing suitable varieties. In Shiojiri, there is the Château Mercian Kikyogahara Winery, where the Kikyogahara Vineyard produces grapes for the internationally acclaimed Chateau Merican Kikyogahara Merlot. The Kataoka Vineyard was opened in 2015 as a grape growing area along with the winery's Kikyogahara Vineyard, and vines first planted in 2017. These three wines are the first vintages bearing the name “Kataoka Vineyard”.

This wine is an aromatic wine that combines the black fruits and subtle spicy nuances of Merlot with the freshness and aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc by vinifying the two grape varieties together.
Château Mercian Kataoka Vineyard Merlot Barrel Selection 2019
This wine is solid with black fruits of blackberry and prune with a hint of spiciness. It is well balanced to express the vibrant characteristics of the young vines.
Château Mercian Kataoka Vineyard 2019
This wine is a well-balanced by assemblage of Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The black fruits with a hint of spicy nuance in Merlot are complemented by the aromatic complexity of Cabernet Franc to create a wine with complexity and cohesion.
